30dayswild encourages a greater connection with nature by challenging us to take part in a random act of wildness every day during June. On working days this might mean waiting until the evening to fit in some wild time, if you haven’t has a wild commute or lunchtime. Long, light evenings at this time of year make it easy to fit some wild time in after the working day is done, here are my ideas for a wild evening:
- Go for a walk- anywhere will do, there’s wildlife to be found even in the most unpromising locations.
- Watch the sunset- after a long day there’s nothing better than enjoying a beautiful sunset.
- Have a full moon adventure- walk under the light of the full moon, this month’s full moon is on June 8th (actually very early morning on the 9th!) If the night is clear you should be able to see without a need for a torch to guide your way.
- Visit a wood at dusk- listen to the dusk chorus and the sounds of night animals starting up, if you’re lucky you may hear an owl.
- Head for a heath- at this time of year on heathlands you may be lucky to hear a nightjar churring and see roding woodcocks. My two local Wildlife Trusts, BBOWT and Surrey Wildlife Trust, are both running nightjar walks during June, a chance to head out onto a heath with a ranger in the hope of hearing and maybe even seeing nightjars.
- Get out on the water- hire a canoe or kayak after work for an evening float on a river or lake. Local to me Dinton Pastures is open on Wednesday evenings for water craft hire and open water swimming too.
- Visit a local nature reserve- many nature reserves are open from dawn until dusk and an evening visit can be very relaxing and a great time to spot wildlife, or admire beautiful plants and trees. Download the Wildlife Trusts’ Nature Finder app to find a nature reserve close to you.
- Trap for moths- borrow a moth trap, shine a torch on a white sheet or try wine roping to see what moths are in your garden or park.
- Listen for bats- join a bat walk or buy or borrow a bat detector to get an amazing glimpse into nocturnal life by listening to bats echo locating on a bat detector.
- Drink a wild cocktail or mocktail- make wild cordials from elderflowers or gorse flowers, use edible flowers or herbs grown in the garden and make a wild cocktail or mocktail to sip outside, the perfect end to a summer day.
- Have a 5 to 9 microadventure– microadventures are the idea of British explorer Alastair Humphreys, small, achievable adventures that make the most of the time we’re not working, the 5 to 9 rather than the 9 to 5. Pack a bag, with sleeping bag and bivvy bag and head off somewhere wild for an overnight adventure, making it back in time for work the next morning.
- Picnic in the park- grab a rug, some food and drink and your favourite people and head to a local greenspace to enjoy an evening picnic.
- Jump on your bike and hit the trails- exercise in the great outdoors is great for you, and a rush of endorphins in the evening is a real buzz.
- Climb a hill for a great view of the sunset- take a flask full of a warm brew or a cheeky nip of something to warm you from the inside out if it’s a cool evening, or something cool and refreshing if the opposite is true and enjoy the show!
- Watch nocturnal wildlife– there are opportunities to watch badgers in several places across the country from a hide, or if you have noticed an active sett near you, it might be possible to watch them there. We’re members of a local badger group with a hide next to the sett we look after and have been able to watch badgers, muntjac deer and a fox from the hide!
